Whether you are interested in exploring the desert, the local art scene, or a food lover, or really just want to pamper yourself, all of it can be done in the Phoenix area. Here is a list of what I enjoyed when I visited for a few days.
As I mentioned in my previous post where I talked about the Columbus Ale Trail, I really had absolutely no idea what to expect from the dining scene in Columbus (other than the fact that I knew I was going to stuff my face with Jeni’s). And that was mostly due to a complete lack of knowledge about it. I spent 3 days there and my challenge really was not in finding great food, but in not having enough time to try more and having to pick and choose! That being said, we didn’t just eat well, we ate RIDICULOUSLY well.
Columbus, Ohio. I’ll admit that I knew nothing about this city until a few months back when I made a trip out there. Chances are, you probably don’t know much either. But much to my surprise, a weekend in Columbus was barely enough to experience even a sliver of what the city has to offer.
From Uros, we spent about 3 hours on the water going to Amantani Island. On this ride is when you get an appreciation for the size of the lake and the gorgeous water! It was a beautiful morning and (thankfully) the water was not choppy at all – perfect for getting some sun and then a nap before reaching Amantani island for our overnight stay.
When planning a trip to Peru, Lake Titicaca is not always at the top of one’s priority list. Peru normally brings images of Machu Picchu or the Nazca lines, but the lake definitely deserves to be right up there! The lake is the highest navigable (by commercial craft) lake in the world – at 12,500 feet above sea level, and is the largest in South America, at over 8000 square kilometers. Sitting at the border between Peru and Bolivia, we started our exploration of the lake from the commercialized port city of Puno in Peru.
My friends and I have this New Year tradition where we jet off to someplace warm after Christmas, bring in the New Year together, and then get back to routine. Come September/October, talk starts again as to where we are headed that year. Over the last few years we have been to Miami, Key West, Mexico, Honduras, and this year we landed on Bermuda.
Chicago has deep dish pizzas, Philadelphia has cheesesteaks, New Orleans has po’boys, and Washington, DC, has half-smokes. “Half-smoke?” you may be thinking. “What’s that?” To the untrained eye, they may appear to be any other hot dog, but that is just selling the sausage short.
So, what is it?
Day 4 of the trail goes by fast, everyone just wants to get it done. The final day of the trail starts at 3.30 am. We woke up, had the usual coca tea, packed our things and walked to the control checkpoint where we joined all our fellow hikers at about 4.15am, waiting for the checkpoint to open at 5.30 am.
Every once in a way, you have a “once in a lifetime” experience that no amount of pictures or words can do justice. For us, it was experiencing the “Feria de Abril” (The April Fair) in Seville, Spain.
The Feria is held for a week in April each year, starting two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week. During this time, all of Seville clears out and people head to the fairgrounds, packing into rows and rows of “casetas” (tents). The women are decked out in traditional flamenco dresses, the men are dapper in suits, and the children look absolutely adorable - everyone fitting right on the cover of a fashion magazine.
Did you know that the “cava capital” of the world is literally less than an hour away from Barcelona? Considering the amount of cava I have consumed, I’m embarrassed to say I had no idea either! Cava is literally the “champagne of Spain”, and makes for easy drinking, bubbles when you need them, and an economical alternative to champagne.
As soon I found out about the Penedes region though Jessica, it was instantly added to our Spain itinerary. However, I had a hard time finding information online about planning a day trip to the region and visiting a few producers without going through an organized tour. So here’s what you need to know, if you are interested in quick day trip outside Barcelona for a glass (or many) of cava.
